1960 Chevrolet El Camino
A rare model from 1960, this is the first generation of the stunning El Camino, which was only produced between 1959 and 1960. Hard to find, you are unlikely to spot this 1960 version anywhere in the U.K.. The 1960 El Caminos featured some basic design changes from the 1959 production.
A pick-up with a difference, now classified as an SUV, the Chevrolet El Camino was a twist on a two-door station wagon, with cab and cargo bed built into the body.
An immediate hit when it first appeared in 1959, the stylish El Camino was modelled on the newly re-designed trend-setting Chevrolet, that was longer, lower and wider. The first Chevrolet pick-up with a steel-bed, rather than wood floor, its box capacity was nearly 33 cubic feet. On release, sales were 50% higher than the popular Ranchero, selling 20,000 in the first year.
Featuring the best powertrain combination for its time, it could go from 0-60 mph in seven seconds, with a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h) and was fitted with a rear axle suitable for drag racing.
Available with any Chevrolet drivetrain, the exterior featured the distinctive metallic Bel-Air trim, applique and narrow trailing molding. Inside, the grey, blue or green interior of the 1960 Camino included seats with a striped design and vinyl, as well as vinyl floor coverings.
With a full-coil suspension, Safety Girder X-frame and a long wheel-base of around 211 inches (5,360mm), its payload rating ranged from 650-1,150 lb (290-520 kg).
This gorgeous and extremely rare, 1960 El Camino has had no expense spared in its restoration. In fantastic condition and great mechanical order, with full MOT, you will enjoy taking this one on the road. Exempt from tax, as of 2018, it is now exempt from MOT.
Spotted by our North American team, we were thrilled to import this rare gem in fantastic condition, to the U.K. Having received a full restoration in Canada, it is clear that no expense was spared in its valuable upgrades.
Having passed its MOT without advisories, it is registered with UK age-related plates. With no written confirmation of mileage, the recorded figure should be regarded as unwarranted.
Fitted with the bulletproof Chevrolet 283ci V8, the burbling V8 engine and two-speed auto on the column means that it starts, runs and drives perfectly. With a respectable turn of speed, it pulls strongly through the rev range, with smooth gearbox changes both up and down the box, as well as kickdown. A brilliant drive, much more than you would expect for a car of its age.
The recorded mileage is 13,616.
Exterior: Beautifully finished in metallic turquoise, with proper chrome detailing, this Chevy El Camino is in fabulous condition. Well-restored, the paintwork is very good and the chromework is excellent. With chrome wheels and hubcaps to highlight the look of the 1960, this is a good-looking car.
The front-disk brake conversion is an important benefit of the El Camino, that lifts the truck up in all conditions. The large steering wheel is necessary for the unassisted steering box and is quite reasonably precise for this era of North American vehicles.
Interior: Sporting the distinctive turquoise and white design of the 1960 El Camino, the bench seat has plenty of room for three people. The seat, headlining and door cords are in very good condition. There are also beautiful period instrument cluster houses, working dials and switches, as well as fully carpeted flooring to match the decor..
Rowland says: “When did you last see one of these? More eye-catching than a Ferrari, rarer than a Maserati, with a fantastic sound track, this Chevrolet has to be seen to be fully appreciated.
