The Vauxhall VX was a popular robust and spacious family car. Originally named the Vauxhall Victor when it was first released in 1957, the VX remained in production until 1978. For a time, its popularity made it Britain’s most exported car. It could be found all over the world, from Canada to Sri Lanka.

The FB series debuted in 1960, with a fresh, upgraded stylish design. The FB had a flat front and a turtle-deck rear. Inside, there was now the option to upgrade to a 4-speed all-synchromesh transmission with floor change. In addition, the engine had a higher compression ratio and revised manifolding, which increased the power output to 49.5 bhp.

In 1963 the engine was expanded from 1508 to 1594 cc. Cars with the larger engine also featured a block-style grille and updated parking lights. Further features included a heater, fog lamps, a radio, screen washers and seat belts.

Seating on the VX was distinct. The Super and base models had a Vynide-covered bench front seat, whilst the De Luxe boasted individual seating. For lower-cost versions, single seating was an optional add-on.

The VX4/90 was the VX’s sports version. It featured a twin carburettor, alloy head, high-compression, a nitrided crankshaft engine giving 71 bhp and servo-assisted disc brakes on the front wheels. The VX4/ 90 is easily identifiable by its coloured strip along its side, as well as an updated grille and bigger tail-light clusters.

Only sold as a saloon, it had a 4-speed, all-synchro gearbox, lockheed front disc brakes, 14 inch wheels, individual bucket seats, full instrumentation and an engine upgraded to 1595cc, which could surpass 90 mph.

The FB was followed by FC, FD and FE series, until production ceased in 1978.

The car:

This extremely rare Vauxhall VX4/90, is one of the few that are left on the road today. In good condition for its age, this FB VX4/90 provides a perfect starter classic. Exempt from both MOT and tax, it is a brilliant car to take on the road, that will attract plenty of attention. DVLA records state that there are only a handful of VX4/ 90s left, so this is a unique opportunity to snap up a rare find.

This is the 1963 FB Series Vauxhall VX4/90 with the twin carb 1508cc engine and manual gearbox. It also features the distinct sporty coloured stripes along its sides and large light clusters at its rear.

Although the car’s bodywork and mechanics have been overhauled, there are no invoices to confirm precisely when the work was carried out.

The VX4/90 delivers great value for money, which is hard to beat. The last owner confirmed that it has had a recent oil and filter change, and has a new stainless steel exhaust system. The clock shows 51000 miles although this is not warranted.

This 1963 VX4/90 has a twin carb 1508cc engine and manual gearbox. It is in good condition for its age, drives well and handles as it should.

The current mileage is 51,000.

Exterior: The  VX4/90’s bodywork and mechanical components have been overhauled. The underside of the car, matches the body colour and is not covered by suspicious, thick black underseal. See the photos below. There is a book of photographs of the restoration work, with the date stamp of September 2017. The paintwork would benefit from a repaint at some point, but the car remains quite presentable.

Interior: Inside, the Vauxhall VX4/90 is finished in eye-catching red throughout. Whilst the car is tidy, it is not perfect, but won’t look out of place at classic car events or rallies. Its the ideal entry-level classic that can be improved over time.

Rowland says: “Because of the car’s low initial price, it doesn’t qualify for warranty, so you are welcome to come down to visit or inspect the VX4. The car is at our Grantham showroom which is open Monday-Friday from 7.30am to 5pm. Please call us on 01476 563001 to check availability before travelling.”

Come and see it for yourself at our showroom in Grantham on the A52.
