1965 VW T1 Microbus Splitscreen
Volkswagen’s second model, the Microbus (or Splitty) made its first appearance in 1950. Its forward-control panel van with an unusual rear engine, set the trend for an avalanche of interpretations. An off-shoot of Volkswagen’s first model, Type 1 (the Beetle), Type 2 was available in four variations. The Microbus, quickly became a best-selling, highly-desired vehicle, across the globe.
Originally, the defining features of the Type 2, until 1967 were: the spare tyre which was located behind the front seat, the tailgate-style rear door and the fuel tank (positioned in front of the transaxle). In 1964, the rear door was widened, eliminating the back corner windows to create the rare 13-window and 21-window variants. An optional sliding side-door was also added.
Continuous improvements were made to the engine, which began life as the 1131cc 24 bhp air-cooled, flat four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine, used in the Beetle. Reducing steadily in size, upgrades in 1953, and 1959 finally resulted in the 1963 1500 engine, a 1493cc 42 bhp flat four engine with improvements to the brakes and suspension.
A market-leader on so many fronts, the VW Microbus was economical, easy to maintain, on-trend and spacious. An instant hit, it could be customised in many different ways, from police vans to camper vans and ambulances, the Microbus is a much-loved vehicle all over the world.
Identifiable by its iconic split windscreen (designed to aid aerodynamics), the first generation of the VW Type 2, a cult sixties vehicle, ceased production in 1967.

A rare treat, it is road tax and MOT exempt (although it has a long MOT (up to April 2019) and a V5 with UK registration and plates).
This much sought-after 13-window Splitty, with its distinctive split windscreen is a rarity in the U.K. Restored to a fantastic standard, it is stunning both inside and out. There is a wonderful attention to detail, with gorgeous touches such as the wine cooler between the front seats.

The mechanics of this 1965 Microbus are superb. Fitted with a new London VW engine less than 1000 miles ago, the 500 valve adjustment has also been completed.
To ensure that it can maintain normal road speeds of today, this gorgeous Splitty’s lethargic 1584cc air-cooled engine was upgraded to a 1790cc. A new twin-choke Weber carb and exhaust system was also added.
The total cost of the work was £3736.68.
A new IRS conversion was fitted in 2010 at a cost of £2740.
