An ex-French government diplomatic car.

About:

This exquisite, sought-after executive car, first came to the market in the shape of the DS19 in 1955. With a reaction only superseded by the launch of the Tesla Model 3 in 2016, the DS19 took 743 orders within fifteen minutes of its unveiling at the Paris Motor Show, in 1955. By the end of the first day, the number of orders had risen to 12,000.

No wonder then, that this was the only car that President Charles De Gaulle would ride in. A car which was later credited with saving his life. This was a car with class, combining performance, design and handling.

The DS21 was a distinguished car which counted celebrities and world leaders from around the globe amongst its fans. Featured in endless movies since its release, it is still topping the automobile lists for the best cars in the world today. Not to be outdone, it even experienced success on the race track.

With the police and members of the government almost exclusively supplied with black models, members of the public tended to refrain from buying a DS in black (making this car a particularly rare find today).

Released in 1965, the DS21 upgraded Flamino Bertoni’s original design with new, distinct headlights that turned with the steering, the engine was increased to a 2175cc, five main bearing engine with 109 hp. Additionally, its hydro-pneumatic suspension system added a unique lift to the car when started. It was available as a four-door, two door convertible, estate and Pallas version.

A new release in 1967 ended the DS21’s unique frog eye shape, making the 1966 DS21 a much sought-after version. Instead the 1967 redesign had a more streamlined design, giving it a shark-like appearance. In 1970, Bosche fuel injection made for a more powerful 139 bhp engine. Later, in the early seventies, fully automatic 4-speed and 5-speed gearboxes were added.

Although production ended in 1975, this car continues to play a starring role in automobile history.

The car:

This outstanding ex-diplomatic 1966 Citroen DS21 is a rare and exceptional find. In stunning condition and hard-to-find black, this is probably the best DS21 you will ever see advertised for sale.

LHD, this was originally a French Government diplomatic car. Fully road legal in the U.K. it comes with a full MOT.

History:

This ex-diplomatic DS21 arrived in 1990 and underwent restoration. The recorded mileage at just over 85,000 is believed to be genuine. First registered in Paris, this exquisite Citroen DS21 has been a concours winner twice, in the Northern region of the UK.

With a current MOT, full UK registration papers and a logbook, it also exempt from tax.

Engine:

The car is a four cylinder 2175cc, producing 109bhp.

Its powerplant starts instantly, and pulls strongly through the gears. Many of these cars had a semi-automatic box, but this car has the much preferred 4-speed manual column change gearbox. The gearchange is precise and smooth.

The current mileage is 85,000.

Exterior: Finished in a flawless gleaming black, the body on this Citroen DS is perfect. A bold statement to make – come and see it for yourself.

Its not just us. When we collected the car the transport company said it was one of the only cars that they had come across that was free from marks or chips.

As a government DS, the B and C pillars are the same colour as the body, rather than the  brushed aluminium finish of standard version..

Interior: Inside, the DS21 is exquisite. In stunning condition, the fabric seating, instruments, door cards, carpets and headlining are excellent. All the instruments, switches and dials are in working order, and there is a lovely patina throughout the car.

You will be intrigued to learn that during restoration by Citroen specialists, Dave Ashworth of Blackpool (photographic records are supplied with the car), a hidden panel was discovered on the inside of the passenger-side front wing. Who knows what the diplomats stored in there…

The key identifying feature of the government cars was the colour of the inside doors, which were painted off-white/grey instead of the usual black.

Rowland says: “This is a one-off opportunity to invest in a rare piece of history, as well as a motor car. The documentation and photographs give a clue as to the thoroughness and sympathy of the restoration.  This Citroen DS21 is probably the best that you will ever see advertised for sale. We highly recommend it.”
