SOLD into Northern Ireland

Sold to Jaguar in 1960, the Daimler’s remarkable history is unsurpassed. Established in 1893, the Daimler company have a long history as a superior vehicle manufacturer, favoured by both the British aristocracy and the British royal family.

With a Royal Warrant that lasted for fifty years and Winston Churchill amongst its most ardent fans, the Daimler’s status as a superior, aspirational car was sealed.

Becoming part of Jaguar in 1960, the Daimler Sovereign was first released in 1966. Based on Jaguar’s luxurious, sporty, 1966 420 (which evolved from the luxe Jaguar S-type), the Daimler was composed of the Jaguar’s latest body shell, chassis and engine.

Retaining its reputation as a sophisticated, desirable car, the Daimler Sovereign’s distinct 4-headlight nose, 4.21 straight-six XK engine, dual-line hydraulic braking system, efficient cross-flow radiator, different-sized seating, padded Rexine cappings on the doors and trim and centrally mounted clock were some of the many improvements that distinguished it from the S-type. Additionally, aesthetics including the flying D mascot on the bonnet and premium walnut trim, also set it apart from the 420.

The Daimler Sovereign quickly gained a reputation as a high-performing, luxe sports car with outstanding performance. Later, the next version of the Sovereign was modelled on the Jaguar XJ6.

Losing its name in 1983, it simply became known as the Daimler. In some countries it was known as the Jaguar Vanden Plus, for a few top of the range versions, it received the title of Vanden Plus. However, the story for Daimler is clearly far from over and there is oft- talk of the Daimler’s possible revival.
