ENGINE AND GEARBOX
The 250SE runs very well and is a tribute to the Mercedes engineers. The straight six engine is ultra smooth and starts well both hot and cold. Although not the most powerful of cars, this Coupe is well able to keep up with traffic and overtaking when needed. It settled to a steady hum on the road, and the gearbox changes up and down smoothly. The gear selected is column mounted. We have fitted fuel, oil and gearbox filters and changed the fluids at the same time.
Mercedes interiors were never designed with quite the same class as Jaguar, but this car is very presentable and tidy inside with blue leather seats and carpets with wood veneer on the instrument binnacle and across the dash. The wood could be improved with judicious revarnishing. The dash layout is functional and simple and very clear to read. The door close with a satisfying clunk and you immediately have a sense of a car that will continue to give good reliable service well into the future. The odometer reads 02231 but please assume this is incorrect.
The 250SE exterior is finished in a dark blue, the original colour, and buffs up to a deep shine that is perfect for the car. It does have a few small marks accumulated over 50 years, but over all in in very good condition. The chrome work is very good too, including the double bumpers front and rear, which are very costly to replace. The tyres are all good and the car has coloured coded wheel trims which are essential for this era of Mercedes. The car is a 2 door, and in our eyes is probably the prettiest Mercedes of the 60s and beyond. Those gorgeous stacked headlights just ooze class. The underside has been thoroughly checked and we can report that is is in very solid condition.
In keeping with most North American vehicles, paperwork relating to servicing is not present, but this should not be taken as a confirmation that the car hasn’t been looked after. In fact, any vehicle of 50 years old will by definition have been well cared for in its life to have survived.
This Mercedes-Benz 250SE abounds with quality. It will not be disgraced at shows or club meets, and although not quite a show car, it is a driveable classic that the new owner can enjoy daily, rather than an ornament. We highly recommend the car! It comes with a 3 months engine and gearbox warranty, although this can be extended and widened in its scope for not much additional money.
